With roots extending back to 1779, Soulard Farmers Market is the largest and longest-running farmers market west of the Mississippi. The current market's namesake, Julia Cerré Soulard, donated the property to the city under the provision that it remain a public marketplace. Many of the vendor stalls are held by leases that have been passed down through several generations.
